Safehaven Small Breed Rescue

non-profit, no-kill, toy breed dog rescue

  Storm . . .

Don't let the teddy bear fool you.  I'm the security force around here. I'm the protector, and at 93 lbs., I can handle the job.  Part of that job is to scare away intruders, and although I have never bit, I do have teeth, and I have threatened a few times.

So if you visit Safehaven, and we don't get to meet, don't take it personally.  Mom can tell by my bark if I can greet someone or should spend a little time in the kitchen.

Shiloh . . .

Hi there, I'm the Social Worker.  Even though I'm only a year old, I have a very important job here.  I meet and greet the new dogs and make them feel at home.  I help mom housebreak the little fosters, you see, they will follow me outside, watch what I do, then they do it!  I also help the little blind and scared ones.  I get them to come out of their shells and have fun.

Wi Chapi - The Founder

I was adopted by the Walters from a pekingese rescue in 1999.  Little did I know that year later, I would be sharing my new home with 5 other pekes.  Over the years I have seen dogs come, and I've seen them go on to their new homes.  I don't worry when somebody asks if they can have me, I know my mom would never give me up.

I do have a job though.  When I see everyone getting really stressed out, I run over to them with a stuffed toy in my mouth, I act like a little fool, and the next thing you know, I have everybody laughing.  It's not a glorifying job, but somebody's got to do it.

Taz . . .

My job title is Mom's Personal Assistant, my job description is "Do it all", and I do!    I'm a smart little boy, I know the names of about 18 objects, like pen, paper, plastic, bowl, and a whole lot more.  I can find these things and bring them back to mom.  I also pick up the empty food bowls, and any paper the shih tzu shreds.  I can even lead a reluctant foster dog into the yard with a leash.   If my mom shows me how, I CAN DO IT!     Best of all, I get lots of snuggles in return.

 Honey Bear . . .

The Rescue Ambassador.   I travel to Rescue Parades, I attend grand openings at local stores, anywhere there is a special event, I'm there!  I have to teach the humans about special needs dogs.  You see, I'm blind, but I can walk on a leash, I know my left from my right, I can go up and down steps, and I follow voice comands.  It's my job to teach the public that even a "handicapped" dog can be a great pet.

All of the above Staff Members have been adopted from shelters, pounds, or rescues.

Oh, and we're here too.  We do the driving, open doors, dog food and treat bags, keep their apointments, clean up after them,  pretty much anything you would need to have thumbs for.

No worries with Storm on the job.  She keeps a very close eye on the little ones, and makes sure that no one comes into the yard unless escorted in.  Sometimes she looks back at me as if to say, "It's cool, I've got it under control", and I believe her.

Wether it is teaching a reluctant peke to take a walk in the yard, or picking up empty food bowls, Taz is a helping hand we couldn't do without.
